The Dallas Cowboys have had some of the best offenses in the NFL over the last half decade. A huge contributing factor has been All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. In his first four seasons, he was named to the Pro Bowl three times and also racked up multiple All-Pro nods. Simply put, the guy is special.
Lamb is having another big-time year as he enters Week 16 third in receiving yards (1,089) and receptions (94). Speaking of receptions, with three games left in the season, Lamb has a shot to set an NFL record. He currently has 489 receptions throughout his first five years in the league. He needs 22 catches before the end of the season to break the all-time record set by Michael Thomas (510).
That means that Lamb would need to average just over seven receptions per game the rest of the way to set the record. Through 14 games, Lamb is averaging just under seven catches a game. So, he’s basically on the exact pace he needs to accomplish the benchmark. When breaking his career down, it would be pretty impressive if Lamb did rewrite the history books in this category.
In Lamb’s rookie year, quarterback Dak Prescott missed the last 11 games with an ankle injury. However, Lamb still hauled in 74 receptions on the year and just missed the 1,000-yard mark. In 2022, Prescott was out for five games with a broken thumb. Lamb caught 49 passes over that span, which included three games with double-digit receptions (finished the year with 107). Once again, Prescott will miss significant time in 2024 with torn hamstring. In the six games he’s missed so far, Lamb has accumulated 41 receptions with Cooper Rush at the helm, which is about the pace he needs to set the record in question.
The most important thing for the Cowboys is to close the season strong despite missing the postseason. If Lamb can set a record in the process, that would be sweet as well.
