Just over a week after Michigan fired offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell, the program has found his replacement.

Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, the Wolverines reached a deal with former North Carolina offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey to be the next offensive coordinator on Tuesday. According to Rittenberg, Michigan had been targeting Lindsey since Campbell’s firing and a deal was expected.

Lindsey coached at the high school level from 1997 to 2009 when he landed his first collegiate job as the quarterbacks coach for Troy. He was an offensive analyst at Auburn in 2013 before taking on assistant roles at Southern Miss and Arizona State from 2014 to 2016. He returned to Auburn to be the offensive coordinator from 2017 to 2018 before landing his first head coaching job at Troy in 2019.

Lindsey went 15–19 during his time with the Trojans and was fired after three seasons.

He had a one-year stint at UCF in 2022 and has been North Carolina’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons.

At Michigan, Lindsey inherits an offense that struggled greatly in Campbell’s sole season as offensive coordinator. The Wolverines ranked 128th out of 134 FBS teams in yards per game, 122nd in yards per play and 111th in points per game.

Though Lindsey will take over for an offense in need of a shapeup, he’ll also have a top recruit waiting on him as he gets to work in Ann Arbor. Earlier this month, quarterback Bryce Underwood, the top player in the Class of 2025, committed to the Wolverines.

There wasn’t much to be excited about for Michigan in 2024, but the future looks bright with Underwood on his way and a new offensive coordinator taking over.
